“I managed a Protestant institution in Glasgow Rangers and we were royalists” – Graeme Souness shocking stance on James McClean abuse

Celtic Park

Even for the staunchest of *Rangers fans, this is incredible.

Poppy season is upon and the usual flag sh*gging experts are out on force telling us all why we MUST wear a poppy to remember the fallen in all of the UK wars. Remember, the poppy is meant to be a symbol of the fight against Facism.

Which is ironic in itself when you listen to the media and right wing rags that force this time of year down our throats.

I’m not here to give you all a history lesson on why people are against wearing one, this has been well documented. As has the abuse James McClean has taken for his brave stance on the issue.

But what is shocking is Graeme Souness’s comments on McCleans struggles:

We live in a democracy. If he’s being booed at a football game, or things are being sung about him, that’s not nice.

“It’s not nice for his wife or his kid, it is totally wrong that him and his family are being threatened. That’s abhorrent. But it will just be keyboard warriors and village idiots.

“But you also have to understand that 10,000 Irish soldiers lost their lives in the Second World War – and I think it’s right we remember them.

“You know what side of the fence I’m on,” Souness carried on, “I managed a Protestant institution in Glasgow Rangers and we were royalists.

“Going back a month, there was a small element at several football grounds up and down the country that rejoiced in the death of our Queen. That’s unacceptable.

It was actually almost all football clubs, but let’s not split hairs here. Continue, please, Graeme [Irish Mirror]:

“There is nothing the FA can do about that, but that happened. So James has to get on with it. It is very much his right to choose to go down that road, but I’m afraid this will not go away for him.

“It will be an annual thing he has to take on the chin because he has chosen to go down that road.”

Can you imagine the outrage if a black person was told that the racism they experience was down to their choice and they need to just get on with it?

That’s basically what he is saying. And as for his “I managed a Protestant institution” comments. WTF has that got to do with anything?

Why mention religion at all? This isn’t a religious issue, although there are elements within the British press like to make it so.

One final thought, if we do live in a democracy, why is it ok for McClean to get abuse for his refusal to wear a poppy but it’s not ok to not mourn the Queen?

Sounnes is a hypocritical dinosaur and needs removed from the airwaves and our TV screens.
